Bucharest 4 Events
Bucharest offers lovers of classical music, opera and theatre great value and a night full of fun. There is a great variety of art exhibitions, concert halls, operas and theatres that would satisfy all tastes. Most venues are still heavily subsidized, resulting in very cheap admission prices. As a non-Romanian speaker, you're best off watching an opera (often in Italian or German) and especially listening to the excellent Sala Radio and Atheneul Roman orchestras. Reservations are usually not necessary, except when there's a special show.
Orizont Galleries
Located in the center of Bucharest, close to Piata Revolutiei (Revolution Square), the Orizont galleries are the solution for a genuine art souvenir. The shop and the two periodical exhibition halls provide you with the possibility to admire and buy the artifacts of all sorts: painting, sculpture, ceramics, decorations and glassware. Here a series of consecrated artists, members of the Romanian Artist's Union, display their works. Depending on the gift you want to buy, the prices range between 500.000 and 10 million.
Museum of Art
Romanian Medieval Art The most comprehensive collection of Romanian art from the fourteenth to the early nineteenth century illustrates major developments in embroidery icon painting, silverware.
Romanian Modern Art Paintings and sculptures mirror the transformation of the religious Romanian medieval art into a secular, western-like phenomenon from the nineteenth century onwards.
European Painting and Sculpture Well-known Old Master pictures highlight the characteristics of various schools and trends with a major emphasis on French turn-of-the-century painting and sculpture.
The highly diversified collection offers a generous perspective on major artistic genres (tapestry, ceramics, furniture) that enjoyed great popularity throughout Europe from the sixteenth century to the 1930s.
The collection focuses on Romanian nineteenth and twentieth century graphic arts complementing that of the Romanian Modern Art Department.
The museum's most recent department runs an exhibition programme aimed at presenting the various developments in Romanian art from the 1970s.
Open to the public: 10:00 a.m. - 6.00 p.m. daily except Monday and Tuesday
Romanian Atheneum
Atheneum
was built between 1886-1888 by architect A. Galleron. In front of the building
is the statue of the greatest Romanian poet, Mihai Eminescu.
This hall, inaugurated in February 1888, was built in
record time due to popular contribution, and was to become a temple of music and
the very symbol of Romanian culture and nation, remaining, to this day, the home
of our first symphony orchestra, which, since 1955, bears George Enescu's name.
Sumptuous winding stairs open onto great marble and gold foyers which lead to
the marvelous circular concert hall of nearly thousand seats. In the interwar
period the hall was enriched with an organ and a marvelous circular painting in
fresco. Beneath its majestic dome, the most prominent conductors and performers
of the century were acclaimed: Erich Kleiber, Sergiu Celibidache, Ionel Perlea
and Herbert von Karajan, Dinu Lipatti, Pablo Casals and Yehudi Menuhin. In the
Romanian Athenaeum concert halls, the "George Enescu" Philharmonic Orchestra,
conducted, through the years, by outstanding musicians, like George Georgescu
and Constantin Silvestri.
